Mother’s Day

How to make your mum happy this Mothering Sunday

Days put aside to celebrate motherhood or matriarchal figures can be traced as far back as the Ancient Greeks. The modern day celebration is based on Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent where people would return to their ‘Mother Church’, the main church in their area for a special service.

However, over time this has changed from a celebration at your mother church to the celebration of mothers in general. This was cemented in 1908 in America when Anna Jarvis created the current form of Mother’s Day and Mother’s Day became an official US holiday in 1914.

So what makes Mother’s Day so special? Mother’s Day provides the rare and wonderful opportunity of giving your mother the best day possible; it’s a unique responsibility of celebrating your relationship with her, and as such, it is not to be missed!

To help make this Mother’s Day the best one yet, here’s a countdown to five very special gift ideas for you to get some inspiration:

Luxury Chocolates for Mother's Day

5. Chocolates

Chocolates are always a delicious and indulgent treat for any mum and with such a great selection of chocolates available, make sure you remember your mother’s favourites or treat her to a luxurious hand-made treat.

4. Flowers

Mothers love to receive flowers on Mother’s Day and giving flowers has been a traditional gift on this special day for many years. Did you know that carnations are commonly associated with Mothering Sunday? Pink carnations represent love, whilst red carnations symbolise admiration, and of course there are so many beautiful spring flowers to choose from at this time of year. Whatever you choose, a beautiful bouquet will have your Mum smiling!

3. Simnel Cake

Simnel cakes have been cooked for Mothering Sunday and Easter for centuries. So having one this Mother’s Day will bring a great feeling of tradition to the day. As cakes go, they are quite simple – a Simnel cake is a light fruitcake with a topping of marzipan. Simnel cake is a delicious mix of sweet and savoury, and is a great addition to your Mother’s Day celebration. Of course, if you really want to make Mum feel very special, you could bake your own cake and decorate it for a great surprise!

2. Jewellery

Why not make this Mothering Sunday extra special by presenting your mother with a beautiful symbol of your love – a very special piece of jewellery that will always remind your Mum of just how much you love her. You could choose a beautiful ring or necklace, or perhaps a charm bracelet where you can add special charms each year.

1. A Great Day Out

It’s an unfortunate fact of our modern lives that we tend to spend less and less time with our parents, so why not change this by spending this Mother’s Day with your Mum away from all the rushing around and familiarity of home? There are a host of special events and celebrations for Mother’s Day happening all over the country.

Here at Harpers Food we are no different, from Friday the 24th of March to Sunday the 26th we are hosting a fabulous Mother’s Day Weekend High Tea, where you will be able to spend some quality time with your Mum and be truly pampered in style. You will be served a very special treat and every Mum will be presented with luxury chocolates.
